How To Save Gel Window Clings
Are these chosen window gel stickers, window jellies, window gels, or window gel clings? There are several names for these squishy window decorations that my kids dear to make for each season and holiday. How would you lot like to detect out how to brand DIY gel clings that are not only cute, but also gustation-safe sensory fun for the littles? I idea so.
Now earlier you recall I have gone too artsy on the Science Kiddo, simply stay tuned. There is a ton of science your kids can learn from this. Plus it's a great creative outlet and fun activity for you to do as a family! (For more creative procedure fine art check out Magic Milk, Blow Sprint Painting, and Spin Art Spiderwebs.)
It'due south really unproblematic and simply takes a few ingredients. Our gel window clings turned out cute and fun, merely in time to grab the sun's warm leap rays in our window.
Getting Ready
*This post contains chapter links. Delight see our disclosure policy.
- Four cups of boiling water (about 950 mL)
- Six packets of unflavored gelatin (about 43 grams)
- Nutrient coloring and glitter of your choice
- Googly eyes and/or beads, if desired
- Toothpicks
- 1 large cookie canvass with a rim
- Cookie cutters
- Spatula
Making Window Gel Clings
- Add together gelatin all at in one case to the hot water. Use a whisk to stir to make sure it all dissolves. Spoon out any bubbles.
- Pour the mixture into the baking sail. Yous desire information technology to be about a quarter of an inch thick (½ – ¾ cm). It doesn't have to be verbal, simply brand certain information technology is level.
- In one case the gelatin mixture has cooled a scrap (ten-15 minutes), invite the kids over. Have fun dropping food coloring into the gel and swirling information technology around with a toothpick. For extra flare, sprinkle glitter over the top or add a few beads or googly eyes. (Obviously, these tin exist a choking take a chance to kids who are nonetheless putting things in their mouths. Use your best judgement with your own kids!)
- You probably merely have near 30 minutes before the gelatin starts to harden, so don't dawdle!
- When you are washed decorating, permit the gelatin harden for at to the lowest degree a couple of hours. Leaving information technology out uncovered overnight yields the all-time results.
- Once it has set up, use cookie cutters to cut out shapes or cut out your own shapes using a butter knife.
- Use a spatula to carefully lift the gel shapes out of the pan. Don't worry if they tear considering you can just mold them back together on the window. Stick them onto the windows and enjoy!
*Delight Notation: I have had some readers say their gel clings were too wet or heavy and didn't stick to the window. If this happens to you, simply leave your pan of gelatin out uncovered overnight and try once more in the morning. If they are still also heavy, leave them once again until the next mean solar day. Each day, h2o evaporates out of the gelatin, making it stickier and lighter, and more likely to stick to your window!
Turn It Into a Science Experiment
If you lot want to incorporate more science into this activity you lot could cascade some h2o into a pan, drop colors into information technology, and compare how information technology behaves differently from the gelatin mixture. Then practice the aforementioned thing with vegetable oil. (We did this in our Color Bombs experiment.) Yous could also observe how your window gels evaporate after a few days on the window, leaving backside paper-thin dry out shapes.
Another fashion to plough this into an didactics is to watch how the colors blend and mix together, making new colors. Y'all'll see how the colors proceed to motion through the gel until it'southward completely dry out. Testify the kids how to use two primary colors to make a secondary colour where they meet!
Note: You probably won't exist able to have these jellies off your window and put them dorsum on more than a few times before they tear beyond repair. They are slightly more than delicate than the window gels available at the store.

These expect then fun! What a slap-up idea. Going to the store right at present to detect unflavoured gelatin! Thanks for sharing with the Love to Learn Linky! Best, Sue
This looks similar such fun. The recipe calls for 6 packets of gelatin – how much would that be in grams or millilitres? Tin can anyone help?
Neat question! Each bundle of gelatin is about 7.2 grams, and then six packets would be 43.ii grams. Hope that helps ๐
Thanks and so much. We don't go gelatin in unmarried packets so this measurement helps a lot.
Yous're welcome. I proceed hoping for the twenty-four hours the US changes over to metric, but alas, I may never run across my dream come true ๐
What an AWESOME idea! Thanks so much for sharing! (Oh and thanks for the printable instructions too-fabricated my twenty-four hours) ๐

Hi . im from brasil , what is the durability of this sticker ?
Hugs ๐
They volition concluding for a few days on the window before they offset to dry out. When they are still fresh and wet you can probably move them 1-two times before they outset to tear and fall apart.
Cheers for this awesome idea! One of my kids is doing this for a project merely they only last a couple days whatever ideas on how to keep them alive?
Yous could try to go on them covered in the refrigerator? It probably depends on the project. Anything y'all can do to keep them covered and absurd would slow down the evaporation procedure.
Mine have been sitting out for two days and they are still too wet to even cut from the pan. What did we do wrong?
There are many factors so it'south difficult to tell exactly, only I would merely look another twenty-four hours or two and try again!
